Fujian provincial authorities have recently issued a guideline to Pingtan to accelerate its green construction project and become a provincial-level garden city in 2015.
The guideline, issued by the Fujian Provincial Department of Housing, urges Pingtan to increase per capita green area to 12 square meters, with a green coverage rate of 40 percent in 2015.
The guideline also specifies a long-term target that Pingtan should build itself to a State-level ecological garden city by 2030.
Despite the fact that Pingtan is an island county, it is also subject to wind, sand and water shortages as well as salt damage. The guideline thus asks it to set up a 50-hectare base for cultivating seeds of various trees and shrubs.
In addition, the guideline makes requirements and suggestions for the planning of coastal green belts and windbreaks in the county.
