A 220 kilovolt cable line was laid on the Haixia Bridge linking Fuqing and Pingtan on Tuesday morning.

Upon completion, it will be the first cross-bridge cable in Pingtan, which used to rely solely on submarine cables for power.

Laying the cable is not an easy task, as workers need to lay thick wire on a conveyer to complete the task.

"The diameter of the cable is 16.3 centimeters and the weight requires us to use the cable conveyer to carry out the laying job," said Lin Guangrong, leader of the construction team.

The cable serpentines the power line channel of the bridge for heat flexibility. The laying was divided into nine parts, with cable joints between them, explained Lin.

The cable starts at the Huatang 220 kV transformer substation in Fuqing city and ends at the Zhuyu 220 kV transformer substation in Pingtan, after covering a length of 34.93 kilometers underground and on the bridge.

"Inducting the cable will change Pingtan's status quo of relying on submarine cables," said Zhouxing, an employee from the Pingtan Power Supply Company, who added that the cross-bridge cable transmission is more stable and easier to mend as the submarine cables are prone to breaking due to vessels dropping anchor.
