A batch of seafood imported from Taiwan has recently shipped to Pingtan Port, creating a new source for Pingtan's seafood market, according to the Fujian Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
The seafood – 250 kilograms of giant groupers (Epinephelus lanceolatus) and 36 kilograms of turtle eggs – was loaded to and transported by the Haixia, a high-speed ro-ro passenger liner linking Taichung and Pingtan, the Haixia Herald reported.
Most fish from Taiwan were previously transported by air freight, which costs higher and results in a low fish survival rate. The new method of ferry transportation can keep the fish fresh and lower the cost by 20 to 30 percent, said experts.
