Thirty new gas-electric hybrid buses, which arrived in Fujian’s Pingtan Island on March 27, will go into operation soon, Pingtan Times reported.

"These buses," said Gao Jianfei, director at the Pingtan branch of Fujian Automobile Transport Company, "will greatly reduce gas emissions and air pollution."

"When travelling at speeds below 22 kilometers per hour, the bus will be powered by electricity. At over 22 kilometers per hour, the bus is powered by natural gas," said Gao. "This kind of LNG hybrid vehicle is basically a zero-emission vehicle."

Compared to diesel-powered buses, the gas-electric hybrids emit 97 percent less carbon monoxide, 24 percent less carbon dioxide and literally no benzene, lead or dust.

"The bus, which is equipped with automatic transmission, can provide a more comfortable driving and riding experience. It can hold 21 more passengers than traditional buses," Gao said.

The buses will be used on the Line 1 and newly-expanded Line 7 bus route to ease traffic congestion and promote green commuting.
