4G networks will be established on a trial basis in Pingtan, an island county in Fujian province, in May, according to China Mobile's Pingtan branch, Pingtan Times reported.

Eighty 4G-network stations have been built to cover main roads in the area, including Xihang Road, Cuiyuan Road and Haitan Road.

"Compared with 2G and 3G networks, the 4G network, or TD-LTE, has a great advantage in speed," said Chen Yuanhong, an official from China Mobile's Pingtan branch.

Based on its promising future and cooperation with Taiwan, the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone will be part of the second batch of TD-LTE trial network cities after Shenzhen and Guangzhou, added Chen.

Measures to Accelerate the Digital Fujian Broadband Program, a document recently released by the administrative office of the Fujian provincial government, also supports establishing new-generation networks in Pingtan, Fuzhou and Xiamen.

At the same time, Pingtan will promote industrial communication with Taiwan and build itself into a "wise island" and data information sharing center across the Straits.
