A Taiwan-funded cultural square project that will introduce Taiwan's night market to Pingtan Island, Fujian province, recently started construction, Fujian Daily reported March 4.

The project is designed to cover a land area of 2.33 hectares with a total investment of 300 million yuan ($48.21 million). It is scheduled to finish construction in the latter half-year of 2014 and will provide locals with a platform for Taiwan snacks.

"We plan to offer as many as 300 vendor stands in the Taiwan cultural square and hope to attract more small and medium-sized Taiwan enterprises to Pingtan," said Li Yunhui, executive director of Kant Realty, a Taiwan-based property company and the project's contractor.

"With direct routes across the sea, more Taiwan products are able to enter Fujian markets. The closer relationship across the Straits welcomes Taiwan merchants in small and medium-sized enterprises to seek opportunities in Pingtan," Li added.

The contractor will also construct more than 100 low-fee rental apartments as an auxiliary program for vendors in the Taiwan cultural square project.
