Over the past five years, the province of Fujian has received $5.79 billion worth of investment from Taiwan, while the trade value between the two amounted to $48.22 billion during the same period, according to Su Shulin, the provincial governor, who was speaking about the government's work conference at the provincial People's Congress.
Su went on to say that, over the same time period, development on the western side of the Taiwan Straits had become a national strategy, reflecting Fujian's importance in the greater picture and its role in national reunification. The Chinese government has provided the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Area, an island offshore with county status, with more policy favors than for any other special economic zone.
Meanwhile, the province, in addition to expanding its Fuzhou Taiwanese Business Investment Area, has also established new investment sites in the cities of Quanzhou and Zhangzhou, at the Taiwan Farmers Pioneer Park, in the city of Fuqing, and at the Cross-Straits Financial Center, in the coastal city of Xiamen.
Su concluded by saying that, in 2013, Fujian will increase cooperation with Taiwan, create closer economic, trade and cultural exchanges, and develop better cooperation methods, and introduce more technology and management methods from Taiwan-funded enterprises. The province is also working on developing a commodity center in Taiwan to expand trade.
