An expert panel approved the Plan for the Improvement and Protection of Islands in the Fujian Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone at a conference held by the Fujian Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries in Pingtan on Jan 29, reported Pingtan Times.

The plan is part of the nation's overall environmental protection plan. It includes the Tangyu Island improvement and protection project and a project to make use of rainwater and floodwater at Lubei Lake on Haitan Island. The total investment for the plan is 220 million yuan ($35.38 million).

The plan is expected to upgrade Pingtan's agricultural water supply capability and eco-environment and public transportation infrastructures. The case will set an example for island protection and exploration in the nation.

Experts gave suggestions and approved the plan based on field research and analyses of Tangyu Island and Lubei Lake. The plan's final draft will be submitted to the State Oceanic Administration PRC for approval.
