Interior walls of ancient houses

Materials of the interior walls are wood, stone, brick or adobe. According to its components, the wood wall is divided into several parts, known as, ‘Gedu’, ‘Yaodu’, ‘Shendu’ and ‘Dingdu’. The ‘Shendu’ part which faces the hall is often decorated with wood carving, color pictures, couplets or the family motto. A separating wood wall is a rare technique, while simple styles of separating wall design is also found in some houses.

The door facing the patio is usually made from wood, which is called ‘Longshan’ and ‘Geshan’. This kind of design can be found in Zhuang Yongbing’s Residence, General Shilang’s Residence and others.

Carvings can be seen on ‘Yaodu’ and ‘Dingdu’ parts of the walls, while bamboo stem shapes , similar designs and even poems are used to decorate the ‘Shendu’ part of the wall.
