"Never too old to learn." Here is a 71-year-old Japanese man demonstrating the truth of this statement by his actions.

Kano Shoji, who used to work for the International Friendship Communication Center in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, recently succeeded in applying for Jilin Huaqiao Foreign Language University and has started his college life here.

"This is a paradise for foreign language learners," Kano said.

He was upset when he thought an application by a man in his 70s would never be accepted by the university.

"I received my offer only by handing in my telephone number, an application and some certificates," he said with excitement.

"I always believe that there are many similarities in Chinese culture and Japanese culture including the language and clothes, as well as some of the traditions. I always want to be here to experience that," Kano added.

Every day, Kano starts his day by making a cup of coffee and having some desert. He then goes to the library. He loves reading and spends nearly all his spare time with books. "I regard myself as a long distance runner and I will keep running on the road of knowledge," he said.

His favorite course is the Chinese culture workshop, during which he studies painting, calligraphy and making traditional paper kites, as well as creating makeup for opera masks and getting to know about Chinese herbs.

According to Pu Chunlan, a professor at the International Exchange and Cooperation Office of the college, Jilin Huaqiao Foreign Language University annually accepts more than 300 overseas students from over 20 countries including the US, Russia, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Ukraine.

"The college intends to become a bridge between Chinese and Western cultures and welcomes people in all ages and from all walks of life to come here to learn about Chinese language and culture," Pu said.
