On the morning of July 30, 2010, Qian Weichang, the renowned Chinese scientist and president of Shanghai University, passed away in Shanghai. Qian was born in October 9, 1912 in Wuxi, Jiangsu. He is a well-known scientist in applied mathematics, mechanics and education, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Some people say that his research field is too comprehensive and his achievements in science, politics and education cannot be matched by common people. Qian repeated his words when talking to the reporters: “I have no major, and I do the best I can in whatever fields the country needs me to study. I don’t consider my own gain and loss. I worry about the troubles across the land, and enjoy universal happiness.” He spent more than 60 years interpreting his major: patriotism. The death of Qian is a big loss for China, but his patriotism will serve as inspiration for later generations.
