All you can grill

Tairyo, a popular Teppanyaki chain with around 50 branches throughout China, has just opened its fifth Beijing location across from Gongti East Gate.

Diners are encouraged to bring very empty stomachs or large appetites and go straight for the all-you-can-eat-and-drink 150 yuan deal, which comes with unlimited fresh fruit juices, and sake, making this restaurant a great boozy warm-up for Sanlitun. Although the chefs aren't Japanese (and won't toss food in your mouth like at some other places), they are well-trained, and their adept cooking will be the focus of your attention during dinner.

We ordered almost everything on the menu over the evening. The Norway Salmon, doused in a melted butter/Maggi sauce combo with fresh orange squeezed on top, was notably excellent. The scallops were delicious as well, served with fried garlic from the grill. The sashimi, however, was still frozen to the plate when it arrived, with crunchy bites of ice in the fatty salmon.

The steaks and lamb ribs were cooked with a variety of sauces and were uniformly medium-rare, an unexpected treat. The shrimp was also tasty, although we couldn't discern a difference between the two varieties. Overall, a great dining experience minus a few tactical concerns, and we would certainly return to stuff ourselves to the brim again.
