Turkish security forces seize large amount of drugs

ANKARA-- Turkish security forces seized 214 kg of heroin and 69 kg of hashish in the northwestern Istanbul province in the past two days, local media reported Tuesday.

A total of 35 people, including four foreign women, were detained during operations at Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport and Kucukcekmece and Beylikduzu districts, the semi- official Anatolia news agency reported.

In another two operations conducted in northwest Turkey's Edirne province on Tuesday, gendarmerie forces impounded 6.3 kg of heroin and 30 kg of hashish, while five people were arrested, said the agency.

Turkey is a key transit route for smuggling drugs from Asia and the Middle East to markets in western Europe.
