BISHKEK - Final results from Sunday's referendum showed that 90.56 percent of the Kyrgyz voters support a new constitution, the Central Electoral Committee said on Tuesday.

The committee made the announcement after finishing the counting of all votes from 2,319 polling stations.

Only 8.06 percent of voters voted against the charter and the turnout reached 72.30 percent, according to the committee.

Kyrgyzstan held a nationwide referendum Sunday on the new constitution, which particularly envisages a parliamentary democracy in the Central Asian country.

The referendum came only two weeks after ethnic clashes in the southern part of the country killed nearly 300 people and displaced tens of thousands.
