Drinking water both in rivers and wells is safe, and no water has been tainted in the quake area, said Zhao Haoming, chief of the department of environmental protection in Qinghai, at a press conference on Thursday.

Securing clean water in the quake-hit region is the principal work of environmental protection for the time being, he said, adding that cremation was recommended in line with Tibetan customs in order to guarantee the health of local people and the safety of the environment.

Cremation, sky burial and water burial all comply with the local Tibetan tradition.
