Chinese President Xi Jinping met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in St Petersburg on Friday as both leaders attended the G20 summit.

The meeting is the first between the leaders since Xi took office in March.

Leaders from the two countries have met each other frequently in recent years.

In May, Premier Li Keqiang visited Germany on his maiden foreign tour, the first stop in the European Union for the new Chinese leadership since taking office in March.

Merkel visited China twice last year.

Leading the largest ever business delegation to China in August 2012, Merkel met with Xi, then Vice-President, in Beijing in her sixth Chinese trip.
