SHANGHAI - Dense fog has blanketed Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, delaying more than 400 flights, airport authorities said Wednesday.

The fog began to gather at 6:30 am Tuesday, forcing the delay of 440 flights and the cancellation of 298 departure flights as of 3 pm Wednesday, airport operators said.

The cancellations have left more than 700 passengers stranded in Dalian, a northeastern port city in Liaoning province, according to the Dalian branch of China Southern Airlines.

Meteorological authorities said the fog is expected to disperse around midnight Wednesday.

Heavy fog also swept the eastern city of Tianjin, central Hebei province and the southern island province of Hainan Wednesday morning, disrupting transportation in those regions.

The National Meteorological Center warned at 8 am Wednesday of heavy fog in central and eastern China, with visibility reduced to less than 200 meters in some areas.
