BEIJING - China welcomes Myanmar's smooth general election, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said Tuesday.

The election, which concluded on Sunday, was a vital part in Myanmar's seven-step roadmap in its transition to an elected government, Hong told a regular news briefing.

The election was the first multi-party one in Myanmar in two decades.

Some 29 million voters across the country cast ballots at 60,000 polling stations.
