China congratulates Brazil's Rousseff for victory in election

BEIJING - China congratulates Dilma Rousseff on being elected Brazil's next president, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Tuesday at a regular news briefing in Beijing.

Hong said Chinese President Hu Jintao had sent a message to President-elect Rousseff, from Brazil's ruling Workers' Party (PT), to congratulate her on her victory.

Hong said China-Brazil relations had maintained good momentum and China wished to promote its strategic partnership with Brazil.

Rousseff, 62, became Brazil's first-ever female president Sunday after defeating the Social Democratic Party's candidate Jose Serra in the Brazilian presidential runoff.
