HANOI - Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday to discuss bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

During the meeting in the Vietnamese capital, Yang said China-US relations have maintained a good development momentum in recent years.

China is ready to work with the US side to implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries and maintain frequent exchanges of visits at all levels, said Yang.

Yang said China and the United States could enhance communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and advance bilateral ties in a positive, cooperative and comprehensive manner.

For her part, Clinton spoke highly of recent developments in bilateral ties. She said the United States would like to work with China to enhance strategic dialogue and mutual respect.

Clinton said the United States and China should expand economic, trade and investment ties to maintain the positive development momentum in bilateral ties.

In response to the planned military drills between the United States and the Republic of Korea, Yang said China firmly opposes foreign warships and military aircraft entering the Yellow Sea and other coastal waters of China to engage in activities affecting China's security and interests.

Yang urged relevant parties to exercise calm and to refrain from acts that might escalate tension in the region.

Yang also met Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon on Friday. During the meeting, the two sides vowed to enhance cooperation, promote coordination, strengthen cultural exchanges and advance their bilateral strategic partnership.
