China expresses condolence over death of Yar'Adua

BEIJING - China on Thursday expressed condolences over the death of Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua who died Wednesday night from his protracted illness.

"We express sympathy and condolences to the family of President Yar'Adua, the Nigerian government and people," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Jiang said Yar'Adua had made an "important contribution" to the development of ties between Africa's most populous nation and China.

She said China was ready to make joint efforts with Nigeria to facilitate greater progress of bilateral strategic partnership.

Yar'Adua died at around 9 pm local time on Wednesday in his official residence in the Nigerian capital Abuja where he was recuperating from his protracted illness.

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has been sworn in as president of Nigeria on Thursday.
