A mother awaits trial after she was suspected of beating her 3-year-old daughter to death for failing to recite a poem, Qianjiang Evening News reported.

The mother initially reported to police in Jiashan of East China's Zhejiang province on March 30 that her daughter died from a fall the night before, but an exam found injuries on the girl’s face and hands.

The mother later confessed to investigators that she had beat her daughter heavily for her failing to recite the poem Thoughts on a Still Night by ancient Chinese poet Li Bai (701-762 AD).

She found something wrong with the girl on the afternoon of March 29 but didn't take her to the hospital until it was too late, the next morning. The mother obtained a guarantor pending trial for negligent homicide.
