Tomb-Sweeping Day was in its finale on Monday night when four people, including a teenage girl, in Sanmen county of Zhejiang province were struck dead by a car driven by a local tycoon suspected under the influence of alcohol, according to Zhejiang Online. Another six were injured.
The accused drunk-driver was Yang Guozhong, the chairman of a pharmaceutical and chemical firm in Sanmen county, also a member of the Standing Committee of Sanmen County People's Congress.
Yang sat behind the wheel of his black BMW sedan and drove through a busy thoroughfare in Sanmen where he twice bumped into pedestrians and doled out 200 yuan ($29) and 300 yuan ($44) respectively to settle the troubles, the report siad, citing an online posting at Sohu club. Afterwards the businessman, despite warnings, carried on his careless driving that finally led to the fatal tragedy on Monday night.
The tycoon, who later turned himself in to a local police station, couldn't be reached for comment. An officer answering the phone at Sanmen police bureau couldn't confirm whether Yang was drunk at the time of the accident.
"The alcohol test hasn't come out yet, and the case is still under investigation," he said.
