Mainland official urges to oppose Taiwan separatists

BEIJING - A Chinese mainland official on Wednesday called on compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to join hands and oppose the secessionist activities of the "Taiwan independence" forces.

Yang Yi, spokesman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a regular press conference when being asked to comment on Lu Hsiu-Lien's (Annette Lu) promotion of a new "consensus" to replace the "1992 Consensus."

In November 1992, the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) reached the "1992 Consensus" in Hong Kong. The agreement said both sides will adhere to the "one China principle."

Lu is a member of Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party and the former deputy chief in the Taiwan authority.

Opposing "Taiwan independence" and adhering to the "1992 Consensus" is an important base for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to establish political mutual trust, Yang said. "The '1992 Consensus' reached by the two sides is indisputable and irreplaceable."

He said all the secessionist attempts of the "Taiwan independence" forces failed in the past and any future ones will fail, too.

"Compatriots from both sides of the Strait should join hands and oppose all the secessionist activities of the 'Taiwan independence' forces, so to safeguard and deepen the hard-won sound momentum of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations," Yang said.

At the press conference, Yang also applauded some Taiwan parties and groups' activities promoting peaceful cross-Strait development.
