GUANGZHOU: Authorities in South China's Shenzhen city confirmed on Wednesday that seven workers were injured in a liquid detergent explosion at a local electronic plant.

Two of the injured were said to be in critical conditions.

A dozen workers were using a kind of cleansing liquid, consisting primarily of sulfuric acid, to clean an ultrasonic machine Tuesday morning at Xianda electronics factory based in Nanshan District of Shenzhen, but the cleansing liquid exploded all of a sudden and caused a fire at 10:30 am, said the district's public security bureau in a statement.

Fire fighters were alerted, and the fire was put out soon.

The fire fighters also saved seven workers with burns.

The injured were sent to hospital immediately.

An official with Nanshan District Department of Work Safety said Wednesday that the accident was caused by the sudden dilation and explosion of the liquid detergent the workers were using, producing gases of high temperature, plus thick smoke.

The accident was under further investigation.
