Fog strands 10,000 air passengers in Chengdu

CHENGDU: Thick fog delayed 111 flights and left more than 10,000 passengers stranded at an airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Monday.

A total of 111 flights were delayed, eight were canceled and four were diverted to land in neighboring cities, including Kunming, Guiyang and Xi'an, said Lu Junming of the Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan.

The Shuangliu International Airport was closed from 6:50 a.m. to 10:50 am.

"The heavy fog had blanketed the airport from early Monday to 10:50 am, and reduced the visibility to only 20 meters," said Lu.

The airport authorities distributed food and water to the stranded passengers, he said.

In addition, the dense fog led to the temporary closure of eight expressways near Chengdu.

"The Sichuan Basin is prone to fog at this time of the year due to the humid, warm weather, sufficient sunlight and the huge temperature gap between night and daytime," said Fan Xiaohong, head of the Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Center.
