Cousins Guo Yongzhi, 36, and Guo Yonghua, 44, were shot dead Tuesday when police tried to stop a fight between them and two neighbors in a village in Guizhou Province, said Ran Taipeng, deputy chief of Anshun Municipal Public Security Bureau, on Wednesday.

Policeman Zhang Lei and assistant policeman Wang Daosheng, from Pogong police station in Guanling Buyi and Miao Autonomous County, were informed of the fight at 4:20 pm Tuesday and went to the scene, said Ran.

The officers were assaulted while trying to break up the fight. The shooting occurred when Zhang's gun was being snatched, according to Ran.

Zhang had been suspended and was under investigation, Ran said.

The county's People's Procuratorate is investigating the case.
