MACAO: Macao police arrested five men from the Chinese mainland, who allegedly stole bus passengers' wallets and purses by slitting their trouser pockets and handbags, the Macao Post Daily reported on Tuesday.

Undercover officers of Macao's Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday targeted the five suspects after finding them hopping on and off different buses, where they were suspected of hunting for potential victims, the daily quoted a PSP spokesman as saying.

The five suspects, aged in their 20s and from Hunan province on the Chinese mainland, were later caught by the police and found to be carrying concealed knives, according to the PSP spokesman.

The police launched the undercover operation after receiving resident reports concerning a number of pick-pocketing incidents on board local buses, in which similar methods of theft were employed. Three policemen participating in the operation sustained minor injuries, according to the PSP.
