AUCKLAND: Convicted murderer Xue Naiyin was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years for killing his wife Liu An'an in Auckland before he abandoned the couple's daughter in Melbourne.

Xue, who was sentenced in the High Court at Auckland on Friday morning, will not be eligible for parole for 12 years.

Justice Williams told Xue, of Chinese origin, that because of the previous violence he had subjected on his wife -- including a trip to Wellington to find her, when he took an axe -- Xue would receive more than the minimum parole period.

Justice Williams also made mention of Xue's actions following the murder, which included abandoning his daughter, Xue Qianxun, at a Melbourne railway station without her passport and no means of identification.

Last month, Xue was found guilty of strangling Liu An'an nearly two years ago before leaving her body in the boot of a car.

He fled via Melbourne to the United States where he was eventually found after the case was featured in a television show.

The couple's daughter is now living with her grandmother in China.
