18 killed as heavy rain hits SW China

Heavy rain and flooding killed 18 people and injured 39 others in Miyi County, in the southwestern part of Sichuan province on Monday, 11 others remain missing, according to Chinanews.com.cn.

The damage from the storm – in which 177mm of rain fell between 9:50pm on Sunday and 8:00am on Monday, causing several flash floods - has cost a direct economic loss estimated at 17.7 million yuan ($2.6 million).
