"China and Turkmenistan have maintained mutual political trust at a high level since the two forged diplomatic ties 16 years ago, " said Hu, who arrived here Thursday night for a state visit on the invitation of Berdymukhamedov.

The two countries have "rendered firm support to each other on major sensitive issues and carried out mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, energy, security and cultural activities," he said.

To further boost bilateral ties, Hu suggested increased high-level exchanges and contacts between the central governments, legislatures and local governments.

The two sides also agreed to launch a China-Turkmenistan cooperative committee at deputy-prime-ministerial level to guide and coordinate cooperative work in all areas.

President Hu expressed his country's hope that the committee "would be launched at an early date."

Noting that security cooperation is an important component of relations between China and Central Asian nations, Hu told Berdymukhamedov of China's hopes to deepen security cooperation with Turkmenistan by enhancing cooperation between the law enforcement and security departments of the two countries through information exchange, expertise sharing and personnel training.

Hu also called on both nations to strengthen multilateral coordination for safeguarding common interests and expanding cooperation in culture, sports, education, media, public health and tourism.
