BEIJING -- The Chinese and Russian Defense Ministries opened their direct telephone line Friday to enhance bilateral cooperation, according to a statement by the Chinese ministry.

In their first telephone conversation over the line, Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan told his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov that the newly opened link reflects the level of political trust and strategic coordination between the two countries, the statement said.

Cao said the line will ensure timely consultations and coordination between the two sides on hot issues around the world, hoping the link will promote bilateral cooperation and world peace.

Serdyukov said the opening of the line is further evidence of the high-level strategic partnership between Russia and China.

He vowed to work with his Chinese counterpart and carry out the consensus reached between the Russian and Chinese leaders to promote military ties between the two countries.

The two defense chiefs frankly exchanged views on bilateral ties and other issues of common concern, the statement said.
