Many pregnant women in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, refused to have Caesarean section operations on Feb 29 because they did not want their children to have birthday celebrations every four years.

Officials at Wuhan Hospital for Women and Children said only one pregnant woman had had a Caesarean section operation on Feb 29, compared with an average of six on regular days.

Many women asked to have the operation either a day in advance or to have it delayed.
