A man surnamed Hao beat his girlfriend surnamed Li because of a green cap she sent him as a gift. He later apologized after being educated by local city management personnel in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, on Sunday.

The pair were seen fighting after Li gave Hao a green cap as a Christmas gift on the city's Haidong Road at about 10 pm.

According to a Chinese saying, a green cap on a man usually indicates his wife or girlfriend is having an affair with another man.

Hao thought the gift was an insult and then beat Li in the street.
