French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that his country will adhere to the one-China policy and is opposed to Taiwan independence during talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao Monday.

Sarkozy, on a three-day state visit to China, said that France noticed the peace initiative in Hu's report to the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
France is opposed to Taiwan independence and the island's plan for a referendum on its bid to enter into the United Nations, he said, adding the moves were "unjustified".
Any unilateral action is ineffective and unjustified, especially the planned referendum, the French President said.
In his report, Hu for the first time talked about a peace agreement across the Taiwan Strait, calling for discussion of a formal end to the state of hostility between the two sides on the basis of the one-China principle.
Hu appreciated the French President's contribution to promoting the traditional friendship between China and France, his adherence to the one-China policy and support for China's peaceful unification.
After the talks, the two Presidents attended signing ceremony of documents on cooperation in the fields of environmental protection, nuclear energy, aviation, and met with the press.
Sarkozy arrived in Beijing Sunday afternoon for his first state visit to China since taking office in May.
