A shopkeeper in Taiwan thanked the scampering of a stray cat for being able to escape a blaze that gutted the building he was in.

The man said the cat was a resident of the storeroom and had woken him up from its footsteps. He found the store on fire and got out of the building immediately.

It took firefighters two hours to put out the blaze, believed to be the biggest in recent years. Nine buildings were gutted but no casualties were reported.
