A university student in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, who failed his exams, lived in a forest cave for a dozen days as he was too ashamed to go home to face his parents.

A stranger saw the young man, surnamed Li, roasting sweet potatoes in the forest and reported it to police on Saturday. Li had dug a 1.6 m cave and was living on wild fruits and vegetables.

The 22 year old completed his college studies in July, but the school refused him a diploma because he failed to pass the examinations.

Li has now returned home.
