LIMA - Representatives of overseas Chinese in Peru on Thursday strongly reprimanded Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's attempt at Taiwan membership of the United Nations through a referendum.

Pursuing a referendum on UN membership is an adventurist action that violates the Anti-Secession Law, said Zhou Ruibo, chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification in Peru, at a symposium of over 40 representatives of overseas Chinese in Peru.

Overseas Chinese oppose any activity aimed at splitting Taiwan from China, Zhou stressed.

Deng Boliang, representative of Taiwan businessmen in Peru, criticized the secessionist activities pursued by the Taiwan authorities and expressed hope that the reunification of China can be realized as soon as possible.

The representatives issued a statement after the symposium, strongly criticizing the referendum pursued by the Taiwan authorities.

Overseas Chinese across the world oppose the Taiwan authorities' attempt to realize "de jure independence of Taiwan" through the referendum, the statement said.

Overseas Chinese in Peru firmly support any necessary measures taken by the Chinese government and the people to safeguard the territorial integrity of the motherland, it said.
