Vice-premier stresses market supply ahead of festival

China's Vice-Premier Wang Qishan Thursday urged greater efforts to guarantee market supply during the forthcoming Spring Festival holiday.

It is also important to tighten supervision over quality of commodities and food safety so that the broad masses of the people could spend the Spring Festival in peace and harmony, said Wang while inspecting agricultural markets in Beijing Thursday.

The Spring Festival, the Chinese New Year, is a peak season for food consumption, said Wang.

"All parties must make a great effort to increase the supply of daily necessities and goods of fine quality," he said.

"Ensuring quality and safety should be the priority, with quality inspectors working responsibly to prevent the occurrence of incidents concerning product quality or food safety."

While calling for improvement in logistics and goods' distribution systems for all regions, Wang also urged governments at all levels to strengthen the crackdown on vendors cheating consumers and on the sale of fake and inferior products.

This year's Spring Festival falls on Sunday, but the week-long holiday will begin Saturday.
