A migrant worker faces hospital bills of more than 40,000 yuan for the loss of his kidney after allegedly being stabbed while trying to claim 70 yuan for labor work at Shougang Group, Beijing's largest iron and steel company.
Gao Zhiqiang, 28, is now out of surgery with a slight fever at the in-patient department of Chaoyang hospital, according to Gao's wife yesterday.
The farmer from Hebei province is said to be too weak to sit and is not allowed visitors, medical staff told METRO yesterday. They are advising him to stay away from labor work indefinitely.
Gao came to Beijing in October 2009 to work at a garment factory, according to his brother-in-law Song Haisheng yesterday.
After the factory went bankrupt at the end of 2009, Gao started hanging around a labor recruitment market near Lishuiqiao in north Beijing with former colleagues.
On Jan 8, a labor contractor surnamed Bao agreed to pay the workers 70 yuan for four hours of work, Song said, to unload coal for the Shougang Group.
"But halfway through the second day, the labor contractor refused to pay them 70 yuan for the 4-hour shift. Instead, he offered 70 yuan for the complete day," he added.
According to the brother-in-law, Gao and his coworkers argued with Bao without success. Local police arrived as a result of Gao's call, but the police refused to get involved.
Gao told Song that a white VW Jetta suddenly blocked their path and a man yielding a knife got off. Contractor Bao allegedly accused Gao of calling the police, and Gao was then stabbed in the waist.
Gao was rushed to hospital. His right kidney was removed and he was charged 40,000 yuan for the service.
