Travelers who buy products at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) can now get a refund in 30 days instead of seven days.

But customers can only get a refund for items purchased in the international departure zone when they or a relative enter the zone a second time with a valid boarding pass.

Li Shunbo, airport spokesman said the BCIA would also respond to complaints about quality and service within five days.

"Our goal is to build our airport into a large international transportation hub," Li said.

In addition, the BCIA has also made clear regulations about the price of products at designer shops, restaurants and duty free stores at the airport.

According to the new rule, items in designer shops and food in airport restaurants should not be more expensive than shops and restaurants in downtown Beijing.

The duty free perfumes, make-up, wine and cigarettes should be 15 percent cheaper than shopping malls in Beijing, making the airport highly competitive, according to the new regulation.

The number of passengers who travel through BCIA this year reached a record 60 million on Nov 30.

It was the fourth busiest in the world after Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, Heathrow in London and O'Hare in Chicago.

Currently, around 180,000 passengers arrive and depart from BCIA every day. It is estimated that by the end of this year, the number of passengers will reach 65 million.

Chen Hong, a salesperson at Beverly Hills Polo Club in terminal three, said it is very rare that customers come for refunds, but she believed the current 30-day refund period would benefit customers.

"Previously, we offered a seven-day refund period. But our customers are from all over China, even all over the world.

"It's highly unlikely for them to return things in seven days after they change their mind," Chen said.

Pei Shengbin, a passenger who travels for business, welcomed the new refund policy.

In some European countries, customers can get a refund within one month, he said.

"I am pleased to see that the airport in our country has improved to an international standard," he said.
