HONG KONG - Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority has recently completed the tendering process of the design and built contract for the artificial islands and tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the key contract of the massive bridge, the Hong Kong government said in a statement on Wednesday.

The consortium, led by China Communications Construction Co, has ranked as the first candidate in the tender assessment, said the statement, unveiling the tender assessment result notice.

The tender assessment result notice will be published on Thursday in the Chinese mainland.

The whole tendering process and its supervision were undertaken by the relevant authorities in the mainland, it said.

The team members of the joint venture include AECOM Asia Company Ltd, Shanghai Urban Construction (Group) Co, China Highway Planning and Design Institute Inc, COWI A/S, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering and Rail Transit Design and Research Institute and CCCC Fourth Harbor Engineering Investigation and Design Institute.

The contract mainly consists of the design and construction of an immersed tube tunnel of approximate 6.7 kilometers and two artificial islands, according to the statement.

The tunnel will become the longest immersed tube tunnel in the world on completion.

Since the artificial islands and tunnel will be constructed in sea environment, it is anticipated that the technical difficulties and challenges will be of world-class level taken into account of the long distance ventilation and safety design, prefabrication and marine transportation of huge pipe segments, joining pipe segments under high water pressure as well as construction of the west and east artificial islands, etc.

The successful completion of this tendering process marks a new chapter of the project of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

The contract will tentatively commence this year for completion by the end of 2016.

The main bridge of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge runs from the artificial island off Gongbei of Zhuhai and reaches Guangdong- Hong Kong boundary with a total length of 29.6 km adopting a bridge-cum-tunnel dual-3-lane arrangement.

Construction of the bridge had begun in December last year. The bridge will be the world's longest cross-sea bridge, which links China's southern economic hub of Guangdong province to Hong Kong and Macao regions.

The entire project was estimated to cost almost 73 billion yuan ($11 billion), which would be shared by authorities on the mainland, and in Hong Kong and Macao.
