China's arable land totaled 1.83 billion mu (122 million hectares) in 2009, close to the bottom line set at 1.8 billion mu, Vice Minister of Agriculture Wei Chaoan said during a group interview on Wednesday on the sidelines of the National People's Congress, chinanews.com.cn reported.

Wei said the ministry is determined and confident about maintaining the total area of tillable land above the bottom line, according to the report.

Urbanization should be a gradual and healthy process and avoid the impact of land takeovers, said Wei in response to a reporter’s question about how to balance urbanization and preservation of arable land.

He said the country had very strict policies about preserving arable land, and that they would be able to handle the situation.
