Authorities in south China's Guangdong province have ordered a garment company Friday to destroy a batch of its raw materials for export garments that were confirmed to have an excess of a potential carcinogenic substance in the dyes.

The raw materials for children's garment of a company based in Heshan city were found to have excessive levels of azo in the dyes, a spokesman with the Jiangmen Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said at a press briefing.

The azo level in the dyes reached 71.42 ppm, which was more than doubled the limit of 30 ppm, set by the European Union, the destination for planned garments, the spokesman said.

Azo dyes are often used in the printing and dyeing of textiles, and 24 kinds of them have been banned from use in China. Azo is a chemical compound that might cause cancer.
