Qingyuan, based in the northern municipality of Tianjin, near Beijing, is also seeking opportunities to tap the fledgling green car market in Europe, said the source with direct knowledge of the matter.

"Qingyuan is rather positive on the outlook of its export business as market potential for green cars in the US and Europe is huge," said the source.

Qingyuan declined to comment.

The company has sold more than 2,000 self-made electric light trucks, vans and sedans in the United States since 2005.
