China expects record number of travelers in 'golden week'

China's road, railway, civil aviation, and waterway transport sectors expect to carry a record 565 million people during the National Day holiday, according to the country's transportation departments.

He Jianzhong, Ministry of Transport spokesman, said Monday 488 million journeys would be made with road transport departments from October 1 to 8, up 6.8 percent over the same period last year.

The waterway sector was expected to record 7.37 million journeys, up 4 percent each day on average over the eight-day period from a year earlier.

The Civil Aviation Administration forecast about 5.89 million air journeys, up 18 percent year-on-year.

He said transport departments had prepared for the peak and more than 800,000 medium- and large-sized buses and 20,000 ships would be put into use to cope with the transport boom.
