The 7th China Flower exhibition kicked off Saturday in Shunyi, Beijing, marking the beginning of the ten-day-event. Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, and Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, attended the opening ceremony.

Hosted by the State Forestry Administration, the China Flower Association, the People's Government of Beijing Municipality and Shandong Provincial Government, the exhibition has attracted domestic exhibitors from 31 provinces and municipalities as well as foreign exhibitors from 27 countries and regions. According to the host of the event, more than 1,300 exhibitors are participating.

The exhibition attracted more than 60,000 visitors on Saturday, the event host added.

The gross area of the exhibition covers 99,600 sq m, with a display area covering 54,000 sq m, combined from three exhibition areas—the main exhibition hall, the outdoor display area and the Beijing International Flower Port. It provides approximately 5,600 booths for the exhibitors, making the flower exhibition the top one in history in terms of both size and number of entrants.

All species of plants and gardening with distinctive local characteristics were displayed in different booths, with fans of gardening and flower arrangement from all over the world flocking into the exhibition area in order to get a taste of the enchanting beauty.

"It's amazing that we can admire so many natural beauties in a day. The flower arrangement artworks really took my breath away," Wang Yizhi, a school teacher in Shunyi said with excitement.

Held ahead of the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China with a theme of "Creative Development & Harmonious Prosperity", the blossoming prosperity is seen as a great present for the country. Thus, many flowers were arranged in the shape of "60" and other symbolic arrangements to celebrate the special day.

In addition to the flower displays, lectures on flower culture and flower arrangement performances were also held during the show.

Foreign exhibitors also introduced advanced gardening technologies and machines as well as different kind of local seeds. "Many Chinese people have high tastes in flowers, and they're not satisfied with the domestic species anymore. That's why we came here to display the uniquely beautiful Australian flowers and foliage. I'm glad that people are showing interests in our flowers," an exhibitor from Australia's Lynch Trading, a floral house and marketer, told chinadaily.com.cn.

Different plants, seeds, flower fertilizer and garden tools were displayed and attracted potential buyers or investors at the 260 sales booths set up for the exhibitors.

About 40 million potted flowers are decorating Beijing streets as the capital prepares for the upcoming National Day celebration honoring the 60th anniversary, including 22 large-scale solid parterres set up along Chang'an Avenue, China Central Television reported. The same number of flowers decorated Beijing for last year's Olympics and Paralympics.

China is now the biggest base for floriculture production in the world and an important country for flower import and export, according to the China Flower Association.
