The auto sector is an important pillar industry of the national economy, and it could significantly expand employment and boost spending, Zhang said in Beijing at the Third Session of the China International Auto Parts Expo.

He urged the promotion of mergers within the sector to cultivate big players, and asked auto makers to invest more on research to develop new models that are more energy-efficient or use alternative energies.

Zhang told auto parts makers to improve competitiveness for a huge market that is expected to see 12 million autos come off production lines this year, which will push the total number of autos in the country up to 75 million.
