Telecom operator China Unicom is investing 20 billion yuan ($2.93 billion) in Shanghai over the next three years to expand and upgrade its network in the city.

China Unicom will invest 800 million yuan from the funds to set up a high-quality WCDMA network to ensure it runs smoothly during next year's World Expo, according to a strategic pact it signed with the Shanghai Municipal government.
