The projection is lower than the earlier World Bank forecast of 6.5 percent and the Asian Development Bank's 7 percent.

With a sizeable monetary and fiscal stimulus, activity is projected to pick up over the course of 2009 and 2010, the report said. It forecasts that China's economic growth would accelerate to 8.5 percent in 2010.

It also predicted that the country's consumer inflation will drop 1 percent in 2009, as the slowdown in economic activity and the steep falls in oil and other commodity prices contribute to rapid disinflation.
